Clear definitions of common diabetes terms to help you understand your care.

Blood glucose

The amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood, usually measured in mmol/L or mg/dL.

HbA1c

A blood test that shows your average blood glucose over the past 2–3 months.

Hypoglycaemia (hypo)

Low blood glucose that may cause shaking, sweating, confusion or dizziness and needs prompt treatment.

Hyperglycaemia (hyper)

High blood glucose that can cause thirst, tiredness and frequent urination if sustained.

Insulin

A hormone that helps glucose enter your cells for energy. Some people with diabetes need insulin therapy.
